Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf was born around 580 CE into the Banu Zuhrah clan of the Quraysh in Makkah. His birth name was Abd Amr, which was later changed to Abdur-Rahman (Servant of the Most Merciful) by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after he accepted Islam.
He grew up in a family that was well-connected within the Quraysh and showed an aptitude for trade from an early age.
