Uthman ibn Affan was born around 576 CE into the wealthy and influential Banu Umayyah clan of the Quraysh tribe. His father was Affan ibn Abi al-As, a prosperous merchant.

He grew up in a privileged household and received a good education by the standards of his time. Uthman was known from his youth for his modest and reserved demeanor.

Some sources indicate he was born in Ta'if, though other accounts place his birth in Makkah. He was raised in Makkah and became familiar with trade and commerce from an early age.
